  • Can I marry Captain America?

Out of all the superheros I really think he might be my favorite (it's a tough decision w/ all the super-ness of superheros out there).

Dr. Abraham Erskine: "Do you want to kill Nazi's ?"
    Steve Rogers/Captain America: "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies; I don't care where they're from."

A man who understands the value of human life.  A man who is humble.  A man who is steadfast.  A man who leads.  A man who willingly sacrifices himself before those that he leads.  A man who is compassionate.

And can I be Arwen from Lord of the Rings?  (I know not the same genre, but she is the best choice)

Witch King: "Give up the Halfling, She-Elf!"

Arwen [draws her sword]:  If you want him, come and claim him!

[as Frodo collapses and begins to fade

Arwen: " Frodo, don't give in! Not now!  What Grace is given me, let it pass to him. Let him be spared. Save him. "

A woman who is both beautiful and brave.  A woman who is willing to give sacrificially of herself.  A woman who is not hard and controlling, but one who is soft, nourishing, and inviting.  A woman who inspires and encourages the men in her life to do what is right and to be all that they are meant to be.  A woman who hopes.

How does a man become Captain America (or Aragorn would be a good one too)?  How do I become a woman like Arwen?   I've tried but... " I want to do what is right, but I can’t.  I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.  I love God’s law with all my heart.  But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin." Romans 7:18-25

"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" -2 Corinthians 5:17

"The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life."-John 10:10

Lord help me to be who you want me to be.

Someone who lives purposely and fully.

Someone who is glorifying to You.

Help me, because I can't do it without you.

  • "We'll pump your gas!"

Is it just me?  Or is it weird to have an attendant pump your gas for you?  -- Today, on my flashing "low gas" light, in my brother's very expensive Hummer, I drove an extra mile just to avoid the closest gas station.  The one I feared would ask me to allow them to pump my gas for me.  Why did I do that? I know I could have politely refused or just plain let them, it wouldn't have hurt me.  And yet I kept going, choosing to possibly run out of gas over facing the awkwardness.

Yes, it's true. I'm not always that smart.

  • “You don’t have a soul.

You are a soul. You have a body." -- I'm told that C.S. Lewis said that.  Though I admit I don't know where.  But I like it...so of course I'll gladly attribute it to C.S. Lewis.  What's your reaction? Two other short quotes that I hope are food for thought.  And I actually do have references... The first quote is very much for myself.  The second makes me think of many I know who seem to believe that new political leadership will solve the world's problems.

"[God] is not proud...He will have us even though we have shown that we prefer everything else to Him."

    --The Problem of Pain

"He who surrenders himself without reservation to the temporal claims of a nation, or a party, or a class is rendering to Caesar that which, of all things, most emphatically belongs to God: himself..."

  • "Strong" is the new "skinny"

So apparently some people think that these chicks look too manly.  Really?!?! Are you kidding me?  I think they look hott.  What's your opinion?

Yes, I'm on a fitness kick just like everyone else in the new year.  But I'm proud to say that mine started earlier than 4 days ago.  I've been more and more convinced over the last 2 years (and especially over the last 3 months) that God created us to live healthy active lives.  Ones that are capable of a ton of different movements and ones that have enough energy to live life to the fullest. They can run, jump!, play!, go for a hike!, sit on the floor and play a game w/ your 4 year old, pick up the bag of dog food and not throw out your back, etc. Jesus says John 10:10b..... "I have come that they may have life and have it to the full." (italics mine) Most of the time I'm trying to convince people of this truth on an emotional/spiritual level.  But lately I've been discovering the truth of it on a physical level.  Of course, our society and modern conveniences do nothing to keep us in shape and doing the amazing things that that the human body is capable of.

Thus enters our chance to learn another lesson from God. Discipline.  Yuck!  I feel like I just said a bad word.  But yet again I have been learning ever since I left earshot of my mother that she wasn't all-wrong about this whole "discipline" thing.   Hebrews 12:11  "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."  --that's right.  Not pleasant now....but later...it's gonna be worth it, baby!

Or as a famous Bethel chapel speaker once put it.

"I see me, in the future, and I look much better than I look right now."

Right now I'm especially learning this physically in my workout and eating disciplines.  Praise God for new lessons.
